The
lifesaving awards programme begins with the Rookie
Lifesaver which is a scheme of badges and
certificates covering self rescue, water safety,
rescue techniques and equipment, and this leads
into the Lifesaving 1, 2 & 3 awards. The
flagship of our awards scheme is the Bronze
Medallion for those aged 14 and over,
which can be followed by the Award
of Merit and Distinction
awards, and for those who like to swim in safe
and supervised open water, then there are the
Bronze
and Silver
Cross Awards. For each of these awards
there are certain age restrictions and pre-requisites.
The RLSS UK National
Pool Lifeguard Qualification (Foundation
Module) is the most widely accepted proof of training
for those wishing to obtain employment as a Pool
Lifeguard within the leisure industry. Basic training
consists of a minimum 33 hours of training
with a qualified Pool Lifeguard Trainer/Assessor
which covers first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation,
spinal cord injury management, and pool supervision.
The foundation module is one part of a two-part
qualification, the other being the ISRM Professional
module.
For those interested in an open water environment
then the Beach
Lifeguard Qualification is for you. Training
is more intensive and includes beach runs and
swimming in the open water, either coastal or
inland. A full first aid certificate is required.
